Chrome: How to rename, sort favorites & edit bookmarks

Are your bookmarks piling up in a happy mess in your favorite web browser? Adopt the right reflexes to rename and organize them to find them more easily. It’s quick and easy!

Like many people, you probably use bookmarks in Chrome to store the addresses – URLs, on the Internet slang – of sites or web pages that interest you, so that you can easily return to them, with one click, without having to search for them again. If you’re very organized, you’ve even placed the ones you visit regularly in the browser’s personal bar, which is always accessible, for quick access, and organized the others in thematic folders.

However, even if you’re not a neat freak, you’ve probably already noticed that you need to personalize your favorites, the bare minimum being to rename them. Indeed, by default, when you bookmark a site or a page, your browser gives it a long name or, on the contrary, a name that is too succinct and not explicit enough. As a result, in the first case, your personal bar is quickly filled with just a few sites with too long names, and, in the second case, you no longer know what a favorite corresponds to because of an unclear title.

Fortunately, it is very easy to restore clarity to favorites by renaming them correctly, either directly at the time of their creation, when you have the time, or afterward. This is also an opportunity to update an address, when it has changed in the meantime, and to put the bookmark in the appropriate folder.

Here is the procedure to follow in the computer version of Chrome, the Google browser. The method is the same in Edge, the new browser from Microsoft that is based on the same core as Chrome (Chromium). And it’s very similar in Firefox, except that bookmarks are called bookmarks.

How to rename a bookmark when creating it in Chrome?

It’s best to rename a bookmark correctly as soon as it’s created: this prevents you from coming back to it later… or ever!

  • Launch Chrome. Once a tab is open on the site or page whose address you want to keep, click on the star icon to the right of the address bar.
  • A dialog box called Added Bookmark opens. By default, the name field is already filled in, either with a name assigned by the site itself or with its URL. Type the name of your choice directly to replace this text which may be too long or unclear.
  • If you want to place this bookmark in the bookmarks bar, use a diminutive or an acronym. This will save you space to place more favorites!
  • Click on OK to validate and close the dialog box.

How do I edit a bookmark already saved in Chrome?

There’s nothing to stop you from editing a bookmark after it’s been created, whether to change its name, update its address, move it to a folder, or delete it.

  • In Chrome, click on the favorite you want to edit to open it in a tab, then click on the star icon to the right of the address bar, which should be colored to show that the favorite is already saved. If this bookmark is in your favorites bar, you can achieve the same result by right-clicking on its icon and choosing Edit… in the contextual menu, without even opening the corresponding page in a tab, which is more practical.
  • A dialog box entitled Edit Favourite opens.
  • To delete the bookmark, click on the Delete button.
  • To rename it, enter a new, shorter, or more explicit name in the Name field.
  • To put it in a thematic folder, click on the menu to the right of the Folder. A list of folders already created is displayed. Select the folder of your choice, then click on OK to validate and close the dialog box.
  • If you want to put it in another folder, or even create a new folder, click on the More button. A new Edit Favourite window will open, replacing the first one and displaying all available folders. Select the one you want or click the New Folder button to create a new one and give it a name when it appears.
  • If the address of the site or page has changed, for whatever reason, copy the new address from Chrome’s address bar and paste it into the field to the right of the URL.
  • Click Save to confirm and save your choices.
